A slow website loses visitors, especially on phones, and speed is one of the signals search engines consider. The good news: most small business sites can become much faster without a developer. Here are the steps, in order of impact.

1. Measure first

Test your home page and one or two important pages with PageSpeed Insights, on mobile. Note the results so you can compare after each change.

2. Caching

A caching plugin serves ready-made pages instead of building them for each visitor. It is usually the biggest single improvement. Make sure your host supports the plugin you choose, and exclude WooCommerce cart, checkout and account pages.

3. Images

4. A lighter theme and fewer heavy elements

Large sliders, background videos and animations on the home page are often the main cause of slowness. Replace them with a strong image and clear text.

5. Plugins

Remove unused plugins, replace heavy all-in-one plugins by focused ones, and prefer plugins that load code only where needed. See how many plugins is too many.

6. External scripts

Chat widgets, social feeds, multiple analytics tools and external fonts add requests. Keep only what you use. A simple contact button can replace a heavy chat widget, see WhatsApp buttons.

7. Hosting

If the site is still slow after these steps, the server may be the bottleneck. Ask your host about PHP version, server caching and whether a better plan is needed.

8. Test again

Compare with your first measurement, and test on your own phone on mobile data. Speed is part of a good launch checklist and of mobile optimization for stores.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good loading time?

As fast as possible on mobile; aim for the main content to appear within about two seconds.

Will a caching plugin break my site?

Rarely, but test after enabling it, especially forms and checkout.

Do I need a CDN?

It helps for international audiences and image-heavy sites; small local sites can do without at first.
