In a product grid, shoppers scan images, not text. Badges on product images act as quick signals: this one is discounted, that one is new, this one is popular. Used well, they guide attention to the right products. Used badly, they clutter the shop and lose meaning.
The most useful badges
- Sale with the percentage: “-20%” is more convincing than “Sale!”. For variable products, show the largest discount.
- New: for products added in the last weeks; returning customers look for them.
- Bestseller: social proof for undecided shoppers, based on real sales.
- Low stock: “Only 3 left”, based on real inventory, see honest urgency.
- Sold out: avoids clicks on unavailable products, or invites to join a back in stock list.
- Attributes customers care about: “Made in France”, “Organic”, “Vegan”, “Handmade”, by category or tag.
Design rules
- Two badges maximum per product: more and nothing stands out.
- Consistent colors: red for discounts, blue for new, dark for stock information.
- Short text: one to three words.
- Same position everywhere: top left or top right of the image.
- Readable on phones: enough contrast and size.
What to avoid
- Fake “Bestseller” or “Limited” badges on every product.
- Permanent “Sale” badges on products that are always discounted.
- Badges that hide the product itself.
Badges on product pages too
Show the same badges on the main product image so the message continues after the click. Combine with a sale countdown during promotions.
Setting them up
WooCommerce only shows a basic “Sale!” bubble. Badgely adds automatic Sale %, New, Bestseller, Low stock and Sold out badges, a custom badge per product, and badges for whole categories or tags, with your colors and a live preview. Do product badges increase conversions?
They help shoppers spot relevant products faster. Real information (discount, stock, novelty) works best.
How many badges per product?
One or two. More and they compete with each other.
Can I add a badge to a whole category?
Yes, with category or tag rules, for example “Made in France”.
