Amazon made it famous: under the product, a small box shows two or three items that go with it, with a single button to add them all. For a small WooCommerce store it is one of the simplest ways to raise the average order value, because it answers a question the customer already has: “what else do I need with this?”

Why it works

Which products to pair

The best pairs are complementary, not similar. Do not suggest another mug next to a mug; suggest the coffee, the coaster or the matching plate.

Look at your orders: products often bought together already tell you which pairs work.

Two or three suggestions, not ten

Keep the box short. Two or three products with their pictures, prices and a checkbox each are enough. Customers must be able to untick what they do not want, and the total must update immediately.

Where to place it

Right under the add to cart button, or just before the description tabs. It must be visible without scrolling far, but it should never push the main add to cart button down on phones.

Add a small bundle discount

A 5 to 10% discount when the items are bought together gives one more reason to say yes. Apply it only while all the items stay in the cart, so it cannot be abused. See also how to increase the average order value and quantity discounts.

Measure the result

Compare the average order value and the number of items per order before and after, over a few weeks. Change the pairs that are never chosen.

Tool

Pairly adds a “Frequently bought together” box with images, checkboxes and a live total, adds everything in one click and can apply a bundle discount in the classic and block checkout. Try the live demo.

Frequently asked questions

Is “frequently bought together” the same as related products?

No. Related products are alternatives; frequently bought together suggests items to buy in addition.

Can I choose the products by hand?

Yes, the best results come from pairs you choose; automatic suggestions are a good start.

Does a bundle discount reduce my margin too much?

Keep it small (5 to 10%) and apply it only when all items are bought together.
