A “Frequently bought together” box is one of the simplest ways to increase your average order value. Plugins differ a lot in how they choose products, add them to the cart and apply discounts.
1. Manual pairs, with an automatic fallback
The best results come from pairs you choose. For products you have not configured, the plugin should fall back to cross-sells, upsells or related products, or show nothing.
2. Checkboxes and a live total
Customers must be able to untick what they do not want, and see the total update immediately.
3. One click, no page reload
All selected products are added in one request, and mini carts or side carts update.
4. A bundle discount that cannot be abused
If you offer a discount for buying together, it should apply only while all the products added together stay in the cart, and work with the block checkout.
5. Placement options
Under the add to cart button, or full width before the description tabs, plus a shortcode for landing pages.
6. Mobile layout
Thumbnails, names and prices must stay readable on phones, and the button full width.

Frequently asked questions
How many products should I suggest?
Two or three. More makes the box harder to read.
Should the suggestions be checked by default?
Usually yes; customers untick what they do not want.
Can it work with variable products?
The simplest boxes work with simple products; variable products are best linked to their page.
