A PDF link is the easiest way to share a catalog, a menu or a brochure, but it is also the fastest way to lose a visitor. On a phone, the file opens in another app, the text is tiny and nobody scrolls past page two. A PDF flipbook keeps the document on your page and turns it into something people actually browse: real pages that turn with a swipe, a click or the keyboard.
In this guide you will see when a flipbook is worth it, what to look for in a WordPress flipbook plugin, and how to publish one step by step.
When a flipbook beats a plain PDF link
- Catalogs and lookbooks: furniture, fashion, wine lists, product ranges. Visitors browse instead of downloading.
- Magazines and newsletters: associations, town halls, schools and real estate agencies that publish issues every month.
- Brochures and portfolios: architects, event planners, photographers who want a premium presentation.
- Restaurant menus designed in print: if you only have the PDF from your designer, a flipbook looks far better than a download link. (If you can, a real HTML menu is even better for SEO, see how to create a restaurant menu in WordPress.)
What to look for in a WordPress flipbook plugin
Many flipbook tools upload your PDF to an external platform, add their logo and charge a monthly fee. For most sites that is unnecessary. Check these points:
- Self-hosted: the PDF stays in your Media Library, no account to create elsewhere.
- Mobile behaviour: two-page spreads on desktop, a single page on phones, swipe to turn.
- Performance: pages rendered on demand and the PDF loaded only when the viewer scrolls into view. A 200-page catalog should not slow down your home page.
- Navigation: thumbnails, a progress bar, zoom and full screen. Without them, long documents are painful.
- Easy publishing: a Gutenberg block or a shortcode, so it works with any theme or page builder.
Step by step: publish your first flipbook
- Optimise your PDF. Export it in RGB, around 150 dpi for images. A lighter file opens faster, especially on mobile data.
- Install the plugin. With E-Reader – PDF Flipbook, upload the zip in Plugins › Add New › Upload Plugin and activate it.
- Create the flipbook. Add a new flipbook, pick the PDF from your Media Library, choose the background and the starting page.
- Insert it. Use the Gutenberg block (wide or full width looks best) or paste the shortcode in any page builder.
- Test on a phone. Swipe through a few pages, open the thumbnails and try full screen.

Flipbooks and SEO
Search engines index the page that contains your flipbook, not the inside of the document. To rank, give the page a real title and an introduction describing what is inside the catalog (collection name, product categories, season). Keep a download button if visitors may want to print the file, and link to the flipbook from your menu or your product pages so it gets internal links.
Common mistakes
- Uploading a 60 MB print PDF: compress it first.
- Hiding the flipbook at the bottom of a long page: put it near the top with a short introduction.
- Forgetting mobile: always check the single-page view on a phone.

Prepare your PDF before uploading it
The quality of a flipbook depends mostly on the file you feed it. Print files exported by designers are often huge, with crop marks and CMYK images that look dull on screens. Five minutes of preparation make a big difference:
- Export for screens: in InDesign, Canva or Affinity, choose an RGB “digital” or “smallest file size” preset rather than “press quality”.
- Remove crop marks and bleed: they appear as white borders and lines around every page in a viewer.
- Aim for 150 dpi images: enough for zoom on a laptop, far lighter than 300 dpi print images.
- Keep the cover as page 1: in two-page mode the first page is shown alone, like a real magazine, so spreads line up correctly afterwards.
- Use an even number of pages when your layout uses double spreads, otherwise the last spread will be split.
As a rule of thumb, a 40-page catalog should weigh between 3 and 10 MB once optimised. If yours is 80 MB, compress it before uploading.
Write the page around the flipbook
A flipbook alone is a nice object but a weak landing page. Search engines and visitors need context. Above the viewer, add a short heading that includes what people search for (“2026 furniture catalog”, “spring menu”, “school newsletter March”), two or three sentences describing what is inside, and a call to action below: request a quote, book a table, contact the sales team.
If the document is long, list its main sections as text with page numbers. This summary helps people decide to open the flipbook and gives Google real words to index. You can also add a button to download the PDF for people who want to print it.
Ideas to get more from your flipbooks
- One page per issue for magazines and newsletters, linked from an archive page. Each issue becomes a page that can rank on its own topic.
- Embed the same catalog on several pages: on the home page as a teaser and on a dedicated catalog page.
- Share the page link, not the PDF, in your emails and social posts: visitors land on your site, next to your contact buttons, instead of a file in their downloads folder.
- Combine it with a contact button such as a floating WhatsApp button, so readers can ask a question while browsing.

Frequently asked questions
Can Google index the content of a PDF flipbook?
Google indexes the page that contains the flipbook. Add a descriptive title and an introduction listing what is inside the document so the page can rank.
Will a large PDF slow down my page?
Not if the plugin loads the PDF only when the viewer scrolls into view and renders pages on demand. Still, compress print PDFs before uploading them.
Do visitors need to download anything?
No. The flipbook opens in the page, on desktop and mobile. You can add an optional download button if people may want to print it.
