Recent sales popups (“Julie M. from Lyon bought this 2 hours ago”) show visitors that your store is active. They can increase trust and conversions, but many plugins in this category generate fake notifications, which is misleading and risky. Here is how to choose one that stays honest.
1. Real orders only
The non-negotiable criterion. Notifications must come from actual WooCommerce orders. Avoid any plugin that offers “fake” or “custom” sales, invented names or random cities.
2. Privacy by default
Show a masked first name (Julie M.) and a city at most. Never a full name or address. Mention the feature in your privacy policy.
3. Timing control
Delay before the first popup, display duration, pause between popups and a maximum per page. Without these, popups become annoying fast.
4. Excluded pages
Popups should never appear on the cart, checkout or account pages, where they distract from completing the order.
5. Design
Product image, city, “time ago”, a verified badge, light and dark themes and four corner positions to avoid overlapping your other elements.
6. Performance and compatibility
Orders should be cached rather than queried on every page view, and the plugin should be compatible with WooCommerce’s High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS).
Checklist
- Real orders only
- Masked names
- Delay, duration, pause, max per page
- Hidden on cart/checkout/account
- Positions and themes
- Cached, HPOS compatible
When sales popups make sense
Recent sales notifications work best for stores with a steady flow of orders, where they reflect real activity. For a brand-new store with a handful of orders, reviews and testimonials are a better first step, see social proof on WordPress. As your order volume grows, popups become more convincing.
Test before you decide
- Check that the names and cities shown match real orders.
- Browse five pages and count how many popups you see.
- Visit the cart and checkout: no popups should appear.
- Check the popup does not cover the add to cart button on a phone.
- Measure your conversion rate over two comparable periods.
Our option
SalePulse uses only real orders, masks names, gives full timing control and hides itself on cart, checkout and account pages. See it on the recent sales demo and read urgency and scarcity done honestly.
Frequently asked questions
Are fake sales popups illegal?
They can be considered misleading commercial practices in many countries, and they damage trust when spotted.
What if I have few orders?
Show orders from a longer period, or wait until you have enough. Never fill the gap with fake data.
Do sales popups slow down a store?
Not if orders are cached and the script is light.
