Business customers need invoices with their company details, and often their VAT number. If your checkout does not ask for it, they email you after the order, and you edit invoices by hand.
What to ask
- The company name (WooCommerce has a field for it).
- The VAT number, optional so private customers can skip it.
- Possibly a purchase order number.
Where to place it
Near the email and the company name, with a short help text: “For companies, to show it on the invoice.”
Show it on the invoice
The VAT number must appear on the invoice. Choose tools that pass it on automatically; see invoices in WooCommerce.
Tax rules
Whether VAT is charged depends on the country and the customer. Check the rules with your accountant before changing tax settings.
Fieldly adds the VAT number field to the checkout, and Invoicly prints it on the invoice. See the demo.
Frequently asked questions
Should the VAT number field be required?
Usually no: make it optional so private customers are not blocked.
Is the VAT number shown on the invoice?
Yes, with Fieldly and Invoicly together it appears on the invoice.
Does the field change the taxes charged?
No, it only collects the number; tax rules are set in WooCommerce.
