Many customers start checkout and never finish: a phone call, a question about delivery, a comparison in another tab. Some of them only need a reminder. Abandoned cart recovery sends that reminder automatically, with a link that brings them back to their cart.
How it works
- The customer types an email at checkout: the cart is saved.
- If no order follows, a first reminder is sent after a short delay.
- One or two more reminders follow, the last one sometimes with a coupon.
- The link restores the cart and opens checkout.
- When the customer orders, reminders stop.
Timing that respects customers
| When | Goal | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 hour after | Simple reminder while the intent is fresh |
| 2 | 24 hours after | Answer doubts: delivery, returns, questions |
| 3 | 3 days after | Last nudge, optionally with a coupon |
Three emails is a maximum. Stop immediately if the customer orders, even from another device.
Coupons: yes, but carefully
A discount in the first email teaches customers to abandon on purpose. Keep it for the last reminder, make it unique, single use and limited to the customer’s email, with a short expiry.
Privacy
Tell customers their cart is saved and that they may receive a reminder, add an unsubscribe link, delete old carts, and mention it in your privacy policy. Check the rules that apply in your country.
Measure what matters
- Number of carts saved and reminded.
- Orders placed after a reminder (recovered).
- Recovered revenue: the number that tells you if it pays off.

Frequently asked questions
When should the first reminder be sent?
About one hour after the cart is left, while the intent is still fresh.
Should every reminder include a discount?
No. Keep a coupon for the last reminder, so customers do not learn to abandon on purpose.
Do I need an external email service?
Not with Recoverly: it uses your WooCommerce emails and stores carts on your site.
