Free shipping is one of the strongest motivations in online shopping. When customers see they are close to the threshold, many add one more product. A free shipping progress bar makes that distance visible at all times.

Choosing your threshold

Look at your current average order value and set the free shipping threshold a bit above it, so it is reachable with one extra item. Then watch how your average order value evolves over a few weeks.

Setting it up

Shipbar can read the amount automatically from your “Free shipping” method in each shipping zone, counts the cart exactly like WooCommerce does (taxes, coupons), updates live without reloading, and works with both the classic cart and the Cart & Checkout blocks. See it update on the live demo by adding a product to the cart.

Calculate a threshold that pays off

A free shipping threshold should raise your average order value without eating your margin. A simple method:

  1. Find your current average order value in WooCommerce reports.
  2. Set the threshold about 20 to 30% above it. If your average basket is $40, try $50.
  3. Check that the margin on the extra items covers the shipping cost you absorb.
  4. Review after a month: if almost nobody reaches it, lower it; if most orders already exceed it, raise it.

Help customers reach the threshold

A progress bar tells customers how much is missing. Make it easy to fill the gap: suggest small, popular products in the cart (“Add a pair of socks for $8 and get free shipping”), show cross-sells on product pages, and create a “small gifts” category. The easier it is to add one item, the more often customers do it.

Be clear about the rules

Ambiguity causes frustration at checkout. State whether the threshold is before or after discounts, whether it applies to all countries, and which shipping methods are included. Make sure the amount shown in the bar matches your WooCommerce shipping settings exactly, including taxes. A bar that promises free shipping when the checkout charges for it is worse than no bar at all.

Use it for promotions

Temporarily lowering the threshold is an easy promotion: “Free shipping from $30 this weekend only”. Announce it with an announcement bar and combine it with a countdown timer for the end date. Find more ideas in our WooCommerce conversion tips, and try the ShipBar demo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a free shipping threshold?

Start slightly above your current average order value so that one extra product is enough to reach it.

Does it work with the WooCommerce cart block?

Yes. Shipbar works with the classic cart and with the Cart and Checkout blocks.

Are coupons taken into account?

Yes. The cart is counted the same way WooCommerce’s free shipping method counts it.
