Every payment method has a cost. Card and PayPal fees, the extra work of cash on delivery, the zero cost of a bank transfer. Adjusting the price by payment method lets you steer customers towards the methods you prefer.
Discounts work better than fees
“−3 % with bank transfer” feels like a reward; “+3 % with card” feels like a penalty. When you can, reward the method you prefer rather than charging the others.
Check the rules first
In the European Union, surcharges on common consumer cards and PayPal-type payments are generally not allowed for consumers. Discounts and fees on other methods (cash on delivery, for example) are usually possible. Check what applies in your country.
Typical setups
- Bank transfer: −2 to −3 %.
- Cash on delivery: a fixed fee of 2 to 5 €.
- Payment in installments: a small fixed fee.
Be transparent
- Show the fee or discount next to the method name.
- Update the total as soon as the customer chooses.
- Name the line clearly: “Bank transfer discount”.
A clear checkout is a faster checkout.
Feely adds a fee or a discount per payment method, as a percentage or a fixed amount, in the classic and block checkout. See the demo.
