Visitors who do not know you yet look for signs that other people trust you. That is social proof: reviews, testimonials, client logos, numbers, real activity. Used honestly, it is one of the most effective ways to turn visitors into customers. Used dishonestly (fake reviews, invented numbers), it can destroy your reputation and break consumer protection rules. Here are seven honest ways to add social proof to a WordPress site.

1. Written testimonials

The classic. A short quote with a name, a role or city and a photo. The best testimonials describe a concrete result. Place them next to the decision points of your pages: prices, contact forms, add to cart buttons. Read how to display testimonials in WordPress for layouts and placement. PraiseWall displays them as a grid, slider or wall of love, and can collect them through a form.

2. Video testimonials

A client speaking to the camera is much harder to doubt than a written quote. Videos do not need to be professional: 30 to 60 seconds filmed on a phone is perfect. See how to collect video testimonials.

3. Client and partner logos

“Trusted by” followed by recognisable logos reassures visitors instantly, especially in B2B. Only show clients who agreed to it, along with certifications and press mentions. A slow logo carousel under the hero section is the usual format.

4. Before / after results

For renovation, cleaning, beauty, design or photo editing, showing the result is the best proof. An interactive before and after slider lets visitors see the transformation for themselves.

5. Real recent sales

On WooCommerce stores, small notifications such as “Someone in Lyon bought this 2 hours ago” show that the store is active. They must come from real orders and stay discreet. See recent sales notifications in WooCommerce.

6. Faces of the team

Showing the real people behind the business is a form of social proof often forgotten. A team page with photos and short bios makes a small business more credible than a generic stock photo.

7. Numbers you can stand behind

“1,200 projects since 2012”, “4.8/5 from 230 Google reviews”, “Shipped to 14 countries”. Specific, verifiable numbers are convincing. Round, vague ones (“thousands of happy customers”) are not. Update them regularly.

What to avoid

These tricks are increasingly detected by visitors and regulators. Real social proof takes a little longer to collect, but it lasts.

Where to start

If you have nothing yet, start by asking your five best clients for a short testimonial this week. Display them near your main call to action. Then add logos, results and, for stores, real sales activity. Testimonials, logo carousel, before / after slider and team plugins are included in the Business Website Bundle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most effective form of social proof?

It depends on your business, but specific testimonials and visible results (before / after, numbers) are usually the most convincing.

Are recent sales popups legal?

Yes when they show real orders and protect customer privacy (first name or city only). Fake popups can be considered misleading.

How many testimonials do I need?

Start with three to five good ones and add more over time. Quality matters more than quantity.
