Free shipping is the offer Christmas shoppers look for first. Used well, it is also the easiest way to increase your average order: customers add one more item to reach the threshold. Used badly, it eats your margin. Here is a simple method to choose the right amount and make it visible.

Step 1: look at your current average order

In WooCommerce › Analytics › Revenue, note your average order value over the last three months. A threshold works best when it sits a little above it: about 20 to 30% higher. If your average order is 40 €, try 50 €.

Step 2: check your margin

Calculate your real shipping cost for an order at the threshold. If you pay 6 € to ship a 50 € order and your margin is 50%, you still earn 19 €. If the numbers do not work, raise the threshold or limit it to one zone.

Step 3: think “gift”

At Christmas, people buy several small gifts. A threshold that matches two typical gifts works well: “Free shipping from 50 €” when most gifts cost 25 to 30 €.

Step 4: make it visible everywhere

Shipbar shows that live progress bar, reads your real WooCommerce free shipping method and updates as the cart changes. See it on the demo.

Step 5: help customers close the gap

When a customer is 8 € away, show products that cost around 8 €: stocking fillers, accessories, gift wrap. A side cart with a suggestion does this naturally. See more ways to raise order value.

Step 6: set a clear end date

A Christmas free shipping offer can end with your last shipping date. Say it: “Free shipping from 50 € until 18 December”. A real end date is honest urgency.

Common mistakes

Example

A candle shop has an average order of 38 € and products from 9 € to 45 €. Shipping costs it 5.90 €. It sets free shipping from 49 €: about 30% above the average order, and exactly one candle plus one accessory. In the cart, the progress bar shows “11 € left for free shipping” and the side cart suggests matches and small candles under 12 €. Customers who were at 38 € add one item instead of paying 5.90 € of shipping.

Free shipping or a lower flat rate?

If your products are heavy or your margins thin, a reduced flat rate (“Shipping 2.90 € in December”) can work better than free shipping. Test what your customers react to: the word “free” is powerful, but a small fixed price is easy to accept too.

How to measure the result

Compare the same weeks before and after the change in WooCommerce › Analytics: conversion rate (orders divided by visits in your statistics tool), average order value and the share of mobile orders. Change one thing at a time when you can, and give each change at least a week of traffic before judging it. In December, compare with the first half of November rather than with last year, because your catalogue and traffic have changed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good free shipping threshold?

Around 20 to 30% above your current average order value, as long as your margin covers the shipping cost.

Should I offer free shipping on everything at Christmas?

Only if your margins allow it. A threshold usually brings more revenue because customers add items.

How do I show how much is left for free shipping?

With a progress bar in the cart and mini cart that updates when the cart changes.
