Black Friday: 30% off all plugins from 24 Nov · Join the list for early access →

Popups have a bad reputation because many are badly done: shown immediately, impossible to close, repeated on every page. Done well, an email popup is one of the most effective ways for a small store to build a list, often converting a few percent of visitors into subscribers.

Offer something real

“Subscribe to our newsletter” rarely works. Give a reason: a welcome discount, free shipping on the first order, a useful guide, early access to sales. Be specific: “10% off your first order” beats “exclusive offers”.

Choose the right moment

Respect phones

On mobile, a full-screen popup that hides the content can annoy visitors and search engines may consider intrusive interstitials a poor experience. Prefer a small slide-in at the bottom of the screen, or show the popup only on computers.

Frequency

If a visitor closes the popup, do not show it again for several days. Once they subscribe, never show it again. Nothing is more irritating than a popup that keeps coming back.

Design

A short title, one sentence, one field, one button. An image of your products helps. The close button must be visible.

After the signup

Show the code immediately, then send a welcome email from your newsletter tool. Use the list for your launches and sales, see email ideas for Black Friday.

Tool

Popsy shows a popup or slide-in with delay, scroll and exit-intent triggers, reveals your welcome code after subscribing, saves consent and exports subscribers as CSV. Try the popup demo.

Frequently asked questions

What conversion rate can I expect from an email popup?

It varies a lot by audience and offer; a clear incentive and good timing make the biggest difference.

Are popups bad for SEO?

Intrusive full-screen interstitials on mobile can hurt the experience. Use slide-ins or delays on phones.

Should I ask for the first name too?

Only the email is needed. Each extra field lowers signups.
