Long, detailed articles rank well and convince readers, but only if people actually read them. A wall of text on a phone is closed in seconds. These techniques make long content easy to scan and pleasant to read.
Start with the answer
Put the main answer or promise in the first two or three sentences. Readers who only need the essentials get it immediately; the others continue.
Use clear, descriptive headings
Headings are signposts. “Choosing your threshold” is better than “Step 2”. Readers should understand the article by reading only the headings.
Short paragraphs and lists
- Two to four sentences per paragraph.
- Lists for steps, options and checklists.
- Bold for the key phrase of a paragraph, not for whole sentences.
Add a table of contents
For articles with four or more sections, a table of contents after the introduction lets readers jump to what they need.
Show progress
A reading progress bar at the top of the screen tells readers how much is left. It is a small detail that encourages finishing the article.
Break the text with useful visuals
Screenshots, tables, examples and before / after images help understanding. Avoid decorative images that only slow the page down.
Make it comfortable on phones
- Font size of at least 16 px, comfortable line height.
- Enough contrast.
- No popups covering the text in the first seconds.
- Fast loading, see how to speed up WordPress.
End with a next step
A related guide, a product, a demo or a contact button: give readers who reached the end a natural next action.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a blog post be?
As long as needed to answer the question well. Structure matters more than length.
Do readers really read long articles?
Many scan first. Good headings, lists and a table of contents let them find what they need.
Is a progress bar distracting?
A slim bar at the top is discreet and helps readers estimate the time left.
